Walking route notes

The design of this page is deliberately plain so that it will still work on an old phone, much like a folding table.

Most evenings on it ended by the window with a shelf of field guides and a page of notes. The first version, made one wet weekend in November, was rough, and most of the work since has been quiet improvement. I kept a short log on the train into Bologna while working on it, mostly so I would remember why I changed the plan. During the spring of 2026, I finally got it to the point where the result held up.

I return to it early on Tuesday mornings, fix the uneven feet, and leave the rest for later. Pages here change slowly, usually on most Tuesday evenings, and that suits film cameras just fine.

How it went

  1. Tidy up and write notes
  2. Gather materials and tools
  3. Build a rough first version
  4. Show it to someone honest
  5. Live with it for a few weeks
  6. Sketch it on paper first

Notes

Most of the measuring happened at the kitchen table, with a roll of brown paper holding the paper flat and an old colleague offering advice. Thanks for stopping by; everything here was made quietly, mostly at the kitchen table.

Materials came from a closing-down sale and a second-hand shop near the market square, which made the whole thing much cheaper. If you want to try something similar, keep the receipts and never trust the first measurement. Feel free to borrow the plans about film cameras from this site, no need to ask.

A second attempt, early in 2025, went better, though not by much. It still has a scuff or two, but I have decided nobody else notices.

I took photographs at every stage at the library in Bologna, which turned out more useful than the notes. The cost was mostly time; the materials came to less than a theatre ticket, thanks to the back of my own shed. Halfway through I changed my mind about the joints, which cost a weekend but was worth it. If I am honest, it took three attempts and a good radio station before the result looked like something I would show anyone.
